During the 2019 field season, Christopher DeCorse directed Ghanaian and American students in extensive excavations at Fort Amsterdam with the aims of assessing the structural integrity of the current ruins, locating the foundations of the now-vanished south curtain wall and round southwest bastion, and seeking evidence of English Fort Kormantin, which predates Dutch Fort Amsterdam. Michael Jarvis directed more modest excavations at three locations within Elmina Castle, aimed at revealing aspects of the Portuguese 16th-century castle that were effaced by later Dutch construction following the castle’s siege and capture in 1637.
